Sparkling Sour Cherry Limeade

You know the old saying "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade"? Well, when you have a thirteen year old Montmercy sour cherry tree in your backyard with a bounty of sour cherries and a bowl full of limes on your counter, you make sour cherry limeade.

This tree has provided a few good harvests already, but this year the haul was prolific.  The unprecedented bounty provided us, several neighbors, chipmunks, and birds plenty of sweet/sour goodness to supplement the diet.

I chose to use the cherries harvested by my kids to make this tart, summery drink.  It is great on ice by itself, but throw a little somethin' (vodka) in with it for a sunset watching companion.

Sparkling Sour Cherry Limeade
makes about 6 cups

6 cups pitted sour cherries
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1 cup granulated sugar
1 (750 ml) bottle of sparkling water, plus more to taste
Slices of lime for garnish

In the bowl of a food processor, purée the cherries, lime juice, and sugar until smooth.  Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve.  Transfer the cherry mixture to a glass pitcher or beverage container.  Slowly add the sparkling water and stir to combine.  Taste and add more sparkling water if needed.  Pour over ice and garnish with slices of lime.  Enjoy!

  2. I love this and made it when I got sour cherries in my CSA box...but I made ice cubes with the yummy cherries/lime combo and use them with all kinds of different mix-ins! Perfect use of the cherries since I am not a baker! Thanks for sharing
